A Success Story

A Success Story...

My best experience working with ELL students was when I was student teaching in Manhattan. I worked with a second-grade student in paragraph writing.  I was successful in working with this student because I was able to work in a small group with her and two other students.  The assignment was to write a personal narrative about your favorite sport.  The lesson was about 3 days long with an emphasis on paragraph writing using a hamburger graphic organizer.  The end result was to create a 5 sentence paragraph about her favorite sport.  The reason the lessons were so successful was that each lesson was scaffolded with a lot of visual support which really helped her.

I provided the ELL student with multiple hamburger graphic organizer.  The first lesson was specifically focused on the parts of a paragraph.  We went through how writing a paragraph was like eating a burger and that certain parts needed to be included. The next lesson was me modeling how to fill in the graphic organizer with my favorite sport.  The student was able to refer to the hamburger anchor chart while she was completing her about her favorite sport, basketball. I provided her with multiple word sheets with possible vocabulary words she would need to use.

The last part what taking what we wrote in our graphic organizer and putting it into a short paragraph with a picture. I modeled how to transfer the work into a paragraph and she was able to refer to my charts while she was working on her.  I also provided her with a checklist of things to look for while editing her work when she finished. The student successfully wrote a 5 sentence paragraph with three details, a topic sentence, and a conclusion.  The visual aids help to support and guide her while writing.

When giving an __________ to students, I always make sure they understand what to do.  I recently gave an assignment where students had to write a personal ___________.  This a _________ that is about 4-5 sentences long.  Before starting I would _______ to the student what to do.  Then I gave them a ________ _______ which helped to __________ the lesson for students.  I told them that narrative writing as a heavy __________ on telling a story using personal details to show and not just tell it. I made an ________ _______  to help support students while they are writing.

Grammar Point:

This blog post contains a lot of different verbs.  Some verbs are easier to spot than other verbs.  Verbs like working, going , learning are all words that contain the ending ing. Some verbs are harder to spot. Verbs are typically express action, state, or a relation between two things, and that may be inflected for tense, aspect, voice, mood, and to show agreement with their subject or object.

Assignment: Write a 5 sentence paragraph and underline all the verbs you used.

  1. It sounds like your lesson with the hamburger organizer was a success. It is a simple graphic representation of a paragraph. I also teach the "rule of three" -- three details or examples in a paragraph, three body paragraphs in addition to the intro and conclusion, three (or four) sentences leading up to the thesis statement in the intro, and so on.

For this entry, you still need a vocabulary and a grammar section.
